Rescue Horses

Our rescued horses now live in a spacious stable with plenty of acres to graze in the beautiful Cañada Honda reserve. Many are happily retired, and those who are semi-retired visit our corral in El Piscacho. There, once a week they help out the children of Chispa de Vida with equine therapy, or offer scenic Sunday rides to students of La Mariposa.

The first horses to be rescued were beach horses who were no longer wanted and since then numbers have grown to over 20! Some of our horses have come to us because they were no longer able to work; two are blind in one eye, and others are simply too old. Some have had medical problems that their owners could not afford to treat, while others were neglected and malnourished. Here are some of their stories.

Odeseo

Ode has since become a wonderful equine therapy horse! His rescue and video thereof are courtesy of our wonderful veterinarian, Sergio Ramirez.

Mila

A Mariposa student discovered Mila and her foal grazing in a nearby soccer field, very thin and all but abandoned. Unfortunately it was too late to save the foal, but Mila rapidly recovered. Incredibly, she was also pregnant again and her next offspring is already receiving excellent care in utero.

Caciques

Caciques came from an extremely poor family whose income relied on having a horse to pull their cart. Ismael talked to the owner, and in exchange for Caciques, we gave him money to buy a younger, stronger horse and continuing support to keep it well fed. Accompanying the rescue were horse lovers from a group staying in our study center.

When he arrived at El Piscacho, he was seen by the vet before began a restful retirement with the herd.
