Rescue Cats

La Mariposa is asked to take in far fewer cats than dogs – partly because there are many less cats in Nicaragua in general and partly because they are better at taking care of themselves. However, over the years we have taken in many kittens and a few adult cats, some remain living with us (there are about 8 in La Mariposa and 12 at Paulette’s house where we also feed several feral cats). Others have been adopted, mainly by Mariposa workers. Here are some of their stories.

Missy

Missy was brought to us some 6 years ago, she had had some kind of accident and as a result has difficulty keeping her balance when she walks. She was also pregnant but the kittens were all still born. Missy has an extremely strong character, is completely unphased by dogs (if one is lying in her path she simply walks over it!), demands special food and lots of attention. She lives now at Paulette’s house.

Bandido

Bandido just walked into la Mariposa from the surrounding woodland. It is extraordinary how the colour of his fur has changed as he has become better fed, deparasited etc. Super friendly though now quite independent.

Sol & Luna

These two babies were found by Oscar, our driver, dumped on a piece of wasteland. They are thriving and still love to cuddle up together.

Nubes & Estrella

Our oldest is Nubes, who was here during the construction in 2006! Estrella, our youngest, was brought to us as a tiny kitten by a family who could not keep her. She enjoys spending much of her time with us in the La Mariposa office.

Maggie & Negrita

Maggie has lived at La Mariposa for many years, while Negrita is relatively new but well settled. Neither of them like dogs very much so have had to learn to live at higher elevations such as a chair!

Dulce & Pantera

These two came in as kittens and were adopted by local families. They live in the neighborhood nearby La Mariposa quite happily.
